Functional neurology examines how the brain and body communicate rather than looking only for structural damage. At Summit Neuro we use advanced neurological testing to identify disrupted brain-body communication patterns, or circuits that are out of sync, then design personalized programs that retrain those pathways. It's used for symptoms that persist after imaging comes back normal.
VNG (videonystagmography) uses precise eye-tracking technology to measure how your brain controls eye movement, balance, and attention. Because eye movement is controlled by widespread brain circuits, tracking it gives objective data on oculomotor, cognitive, and vestibular function. It's non-invasive, and it turns symptoms you've been describing in words into measurable data.
We treat 22 conditions across four areas: concussion and post-concussion syndrome, dizziness and balance disorders, cognitive symptoms like brain fog and memory problems, and autonomic conditions including POTS and dysautonomia. We also see patients with long COVID, cervicogenic dizziness, motion sensitivity, neuropathy, tremors, whiplash-associated symptoms, and stroke rehabilitation needs.
A traditional neurologist typically looks for structural disease such as a lesion, a tumour, or a stroke, using imaging and bloodwork. Functional neurology examines how well brain circuits are working, which is why we often see patients whose scans came back clear but whose symptoms persist. The two approaches are complementary, and we work alongside your existing medical team.
